Do you love Christmas traditions? Do you have any that includes your horses? Well, I love traditions old and new. We have a few that we do each year, but it is always something I look forward to and take delight in doing.
The next best thing to having your own traditions is learning about other peoples. So I reached out and asked a few people to share what traditions they have that include their horses.

Christmas Traditions to Include your Horses
Mary Lynn from Backyard Horse Blog says:
Most years on Christmas Day, assuming it is not raining or otherwise storming, I put santa hats on my horses and snap a few photos. Sometimes the photos also include family members or me. After twenty years of horse ownership, the photos serve as a time capsule, marking the changes in herd and family composition. Kind of a silly little tradition, but I enjoy it for good, horsey fun.

Angela from Axe and Root Homestead says:
Every year the Clydesdales are present and encouraged to sniff and interact with every decoration as they’re hung. This allows for desensitization on the part of the horses for their comfort. It makes for some cute photos too.

Christmas Cards
Christmas cards are important to me. Not just virtual, but an actual card that someone gets in their mailbox with a personalized note from me. So each year I take a picture of my family and yes, you can include your horses and I have that photo turned into a Christmas card that is sent out to all my friends and family.
Or you could find some really cute horse themed Christmas cards to send out.
Christmas Salad for Horses
Then on Christmas morning I love making something special for my horses to eat. A Christmas salad with apples and soaked alfalfa make a wonderful treat with beautiful Christmas colors. It’s a fun tradition that your horses are sure to enjoy.
Give to a charity
Another Christmas tradition we do is we pick a different non-profit or charity each year to donate to. Christmas is a time of giving, and I find joy in it. This can be directed towards horses or horse related charities/rescues.
It’s more about the meaning than it is the amount. So even if you don’t have a lot of money, you can give something. You can even do it in memory or in honor of someone or a horse you’ve lost, which makes the gift all that much sweeter.

Another Christmas tradition is purchasing a horse ornament each year for yourself or someone else. My mom loves giving us a new ornament each year. Hallmark or Breyer horses have special ones for horses. They make a nice keepsake.
Last, you could get your horse a stocking to hang and fill it with goodies. It’s a nice way to include them in your family. Or you could purchase them a Christmas gift of their own. Here are some gift ideas for horses.
Fun fact, Christmas is also my twins’ Birthday, so it’s a very special day in our home for many reasons!
