Popsicles are a mainstay treat for summer time. When it’s hot, there is nothing like a cold popsicle to cool you off. My kids love them, but many of the store bought are choked full of sugar or junk, so I got the idea to make my own cheaper and healthier.
Well, after you’ve been riding or working with your horse and you’re hot, it’s also nice to have a cold popsicle, but what about for your horse? That, in turn, gave me another idea to try my hand at making some for the horses. As it turns out, they were a hit. Even our picky eater horse liked them, so I know your horse will love them too.

How to Make DIY Popsicles for Horses
Tools needed
- Blender
- Popsicle Molds (No sticks so they are safer for your horse)
I recommend these popsicle molds because these don’t have sticks and your horse won’t accidentally bite it or try to eat the stick. I actually found this out by experience (luckily they just spit it out). Therefore, I didn’t want to recommend traditional molds. These are actually easier to remove and were very inexpensive. Or you could pull the popsicle off the stick and feed it to them, but your hands will get sticky.
Ingredients:
1 cup fruit juice – any kind
1 apple – any kind (I used gala)
1 medium carrot
Directions:
Cut your apple in half or quarters. In a blender, combine all ingredients. Begin by pulsating, then let blender run until ingredients are blended. Chunky is ok! Next, pour mixture into popsicle molds and place in freezer. These need roughly 4-8 hours to freeze fully.
Tip for easy removal from molds. Set molds in warm water for about 15 seconds or let sit out for a few minutes beforehand. They should slide right out then.
Feel free to experiment and play around with flavors. I went with apple and carrot because those tend to be favorite flavors with many horses. Leave a comment below if you have suggestions for other flavor combinations.
