After the debacle of 2020, we were all happy to be getting together with friends and family again, and that also meant more time riding and events. So perhaps you had little time for reading. Well, I thought it would be fun to look back and showcase some of the horse books published in 2021. Maybe you’ve heard of some of these and maybe there’re some you missed.
So, as it’s still winter, it’s a great time to grab your favorite throw and curl up on the couch with a book and a hot drink. Ok, I don’t know about you, but that sounds heavenly to me! So, let’s dive in so you can pick out your next new horse book!

The Ride of Her Life, written by Elizabeth Letts, and published June 2021. Letts is a New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Horse and The Eighty-Dollar Champion. This book follows the story of Annie Wilkins and her journey across America on her horse along with her dog. At nearly 65 years old, and given only a few years to live, Annie was on the brink of losing her family farm when she walks away from it all to fulfill her dream of seeing the Pacific Ocean.
If you love a good true story of adventure and following your dreams, then this book would be a great read.
This Good Thing
A Horse Racing Adventure (Good Things Come Book 4)
Good Things Come is a book series written by Linda Shantz. This Good Thing is book 4 in the series, released December 2021. The main character, Liv, finds herself falling short of a veterinary degree and the triple crown. She plunges back into the life of a jockey and, along the way; she realizes there is more to life than accomplishments and the races you win. It has a 5 star rating on Amazon.
If you love fiction and horse racing, then this might be a great horse book for you to read this year.
Run with a Mighty Heart
How a Racehorse with One Eye Helped a Family
Run with a Mighty Heart is a book written by Jennifer Morrison. It’s a new book, released December 2021. This is a true story of the race horse Mighty Heart, a one eyed bay colt, who won the 2020 Queen’s Plate in Canada. The story also follows the story of horse owner Larry Cordes who left horse racing after personal tragedies and how the racehorse Mighty Heart brought him back to his passion. It is a heartwarming comeback story.
If you love a good underdog story, then this horse book is for you.
The Last Diving Horse in America
Rescuing Gamal and Other Animals–Lessons in Living and Loving
Diving horses were a huge attraction at one time for the Atlantic Steel Pier, but as the once busy attraction died out the horses were sold and sent to auction. Written by Cynthia Branigan, this book is the true story of how she rescued the last surviving diving horse and other animals in her work as an animal right activist.
If you love a bit of history and a story of cause to fight for, then this book is a good choice.
Crossing the Line
A Fearless Team of Brothers and the Sport that Changed Their Lives Forever
Crossing the Line written by Kareem Rosser is a true story about how he and his siblings discover horses at a nearby stable in Philadelphia. They are from the what they refer to as “the bottom” where poverty and violence are a way of life. But because of an after-school job at the stable, they discover a love for horses and a passion for polo, along with a way out of “the bottom”. Released February 2021, it has a 5 star rating on Amazon.
If you love a good, heart-wrenching story of triumph and hope, then this horse book is for you.
From the Horse’s Point of View
Beyond Natural Horsemanship: Horse Training’s New Frontier
From the Horses’s Point of View written by Andrea Kutsch really dig down deep into what the horse needs rather than looking at horse training from a human perspective. It takes a scientific approach to how we can understand and work with our horse’s better. Andrea Kutsch is founder of Evidence Based Equine Education and has packed this book full of information on how to understand horses better. Released in July 2021, it has a 4 star rating on Amazon.
If you like research based books and horse training, then this book might really interest you. Or if you want to understand more about horse’s and the way they communicate, then this horse book is for you.
Horse Fun without Riding
Using Positive Reinforcement (Part of: Life Skills for Horses) 14 books total
Horse Fun Without Riding, written by Hertha James, is part of the book series Life Skills for Horses. In the book, there are a lot of different training exercises all done on the ground without riding. There are a lot of fun and interesting things to do with your horse. Released in December 2021, it has a 5 star rating on Amazon.
If you are a DIY person and love teaching your horse new and fun things like tricks, then this horse book is for you. You may even want to check out some of the other books in the Life Skills for Horses series. Might be a fun series to work through in 2022.
